Pocket Music is the eighth studio album by Tatsuro Yamashita, released on 23 April 1986. His first studio album since Big Wave, it topped the Oricon chart and finished tenth for the year.[1]
Recording
The album was made during the industry’s move from analogue to digital recording, and Yamashita struggled with the new equipment, finding the digital sound lacked the punch he was used to.[1] Its release slipped from 1985 because his PC-8801-based sequencing system lacked the timing precision for a natural groove, and the accompanying tour was postponed and renamed Performance ’86.[1]
Release and remix
Pocket Music was Yamashita’s first Oricon No. 1 since Melodies three years earlier, and ranked tenth on Oricon’s 1986 year-end chart.[1] He later called it a prototype; because the first CD mix sounded thin, it was remixed in 1991, and a further remaster appeared in 2020.[1]
