Timely!! is the sixth studio album by Anri, released on 5 December 1983 and produced by Toshiki Kadomatsu. It topped the Oricon LP chart, includes the hits “Cat’s Eye” and “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai”, and is often cited as a catalyst for city pop’s popularity in the West.[1]
Production
Kadomatsu produced the album and wrote six of its ten songs; Tetsuji Hayashi composed “You Are Not Alone” and “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai” to lyrics by Chinfa Kan, and Anri wrote “A Hope from Sad Street” herself.[1]
Singles
“Cat’s Eye” (5 August 1983), the first opening theme of the anime of the same name, was one of the best-selling Japanese singles of 1983; the album features a new recording. “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai” (I Can’t Stop the Loneliness) followed on 5 November.[1]
Commercial performance
Timely!! reached No. 1 on the Oricon LP chart with 314,000 copies, plus 196,000 on cassette, and was the tenth-best-selling album of 1984.[1] A 2008 reissue added the bonus track “Remember Summer Days”.[1]
