For You is the sixth studio album by Tatsuro Yamashita, released on 21 January 1982. Opening with “Sparkle” and housed in Eizin Suzuki’s sunlit illustration, it topped the Oricon LP chart and is widely considered the high-water mark of city pop.[1]
Background
For You followed the breakthrough of Ride on Time (1980), which Yamashita described as the fulfilment of “my dream from the time of Sugar Babe”, and was his last studio album for Air/RVC.[1] Hiroshi Nagai was the first choice for the cover, but he was busy with Eiichi Ohtaki’s A Long Vacation, so Eizin Suzuki painted it instead.[1]
Recording
Yamashita produced and recorded the album at CBS/Sony’s Roppongi studios with engineers Tamotsu Yoshida and Toshiro Itoh.[1] The core band was Jun Aoyama (drums), Koki Ito (bass) and Hiroyuki Namba (keyboards), with Hiroshi Sato on piano for “Music Book” and “Futari”; Minako Yoshida wrote lyrics for four songs and sang backing vocals.[1] “Morning Glory” was originally written for Mariya Takeuchi’s Miss M.[1]
Release and promotion
Promoted with the slogan “Summer, the sea, Tatsuro!”, the album cemented Yamashita’s image as the summer-song specialist. “Sparkle” and “Loveland, Island” soundtracked Suntory beer commercials.[1] It reached No. 1 on the Oricon LP chart, selling 439,000 copies, plus 257,000 on cassette, and was named one of the Best 10 Albums at the 24th Japan Record Awards.[1]
Reissues
A 2002 remaster added four bonus tracks, including “Amaku Kiken na Kaori” and a version of “Every Night”, and reached No. 16; a further reissue on CD and cassette followed in 2023.[1]
