Niagara Records is the personal label of Eiichi Ohtaki. Its first release, Sugar Babe’s Songs (1975), and Ohtaki’s A Long Vacation (1981) bookend the birth of city pop.[1]
History
Ohtaki set up The Niagara Enterprise in 1974 to own his masters, and the label’s first records — Sugar Babe’s Songs and Ohtaki’s Niagara Moon — appeared in 1975 through Elec Records, which went bankrupt soon after.[1] A deal with Nippon Columbia for twelve albums in three years followed, ending with Let’s Ondo Again; from 1981 the label moved to CBS/Sony, home of A Long Vacation and Each Time (1984).[1]
Niagara Triangle
Ohtaki’s Niagara Triangle projects paired him with Tatsuro Yamashita and Ginji Ito on Vol. 1, and with Motoharu Sano and Masamichi Sugi on Vol. 2.[1] Since Ohtaki’s death in 2013, his family manages the catalogue.[1]
