Yoshitaka Minami is a Tokyo-born singer-songwriter, composer and producer whose run of late-1970s and early-1980s albums and hits such as “Monroe Walk” and “Slow na Boogie ni Shite Kure (I Want You)” made him a defining urban-pop stylist.[1]
Career
Born in Ōta Ward, Tokyo, on 9 January 1950 and a graduate of Meiji Gakuin University, Minami made his stage debut at “CITY – Last Time Around”, the farewell concert of Happy End and guests. His debut album, Matenrō no Heroine, followed on 21 September 1973, produced by former Happy End drummer and lyricist Takashi Matsumoto. He appeared on recordings by Tin Pan Alley, including Caramel Mama and Disc Graffiti, and contributed to Moonriders’ Hi no Tama Boy.[1]
Peak years
Wasurerareta Natsu (1976), for which he wrote all the songs, opened a steady sequence of albums: South of the Border (1978), Speak Low (1979), Montage (1980), Silkscreen (1981), Seventh Avenue South (1982) and Daydream (1983). The single “Monroe Walk”, released on 21 April 1979, became a major hit in Gō Hiromi’s cover version “Sexy You”, and “Slow na Boogie ni Shite Kure (I Want You)”, released on 21 January 1981 as the theme of the Kadokawa film of the same name, sold strongly. Yumi Matsutoya wrote the lyrics of his 1978 single “Hizuke Henkōsen”.[1]
Later work
Minami recorded for a succession of labels including CBS/Sony, Kitty, Kühn, Victor and King, and kept releasing albums such as Tokyo Monogatari (1989), Romantico (2004) and Dear My Generation (2018), the last featuring Kazuyoshi Saitō, Hiromi Ōta and Char. Akina Nakamori covered one of his songs in 2015.[1]
