Yona Yona Weekenders is a Japanese four-piece formed in 2019 whose mellow, night-driving sound has seen the press ask whether they are a new “city pop” band; they bill their music as “good music to go with drinks”.[1]
History
The band takes its name from the members’ office jobs on weekdays and music on weekend nights; most of them came from melodic hardcore and punk bands.[1] Early releases on para de casa included Yoru to Album (2019), Machi wo Oyoide (2020) and Uta ga Aruku Toki (2021), plus digital singles such as “Tokyo Midnight Cruising Club” (2020) and “Kimi to Drive” (2020).[1]
Major-label career
Their major debut single “Ii Yume” appeared on Speedstar Records on 7 April 2021, followed by the self-titled album Yona Yona Weekenders (2021), Shikōsei (2022), into the wind (2023) and LIVE (2024).[1] Collaborators include Takashi Arai of the band apart, Choong-ho Sai of bonobos, Ikuko Harada of Clammbon and Ai Otsuka, and the group has played festivals such as Asagiri Jam ’22.[1]
