Yasuko Agawa is a Japanese jazz singer, nicknamed “Sugar Voice”, whose early-1980s Victor albums brought jazz vocals unusual commercial success and crossed into city pop and AOR.[1]
Career
A former actress trained at the Bungakuza school, Agawa began singing with clarinettist Shoji Suzuki’s group in 1973 and debuted as a solo artist on Victor in 1978.[1] Journey (1980) sold about 90,000 copies — exceptional for a Japanese jazz vocal record — and her first six albums sold some 900,000 in total.[1] Sunglow (1981) and Night Line (1983) are the titles most collected today.[1]
Television
From 1987 to 1994 she co-hosted the TV talk show Oshare 30・30 with Ichiro Furutachi.[1]
