Yasuha (Yasuha Ebina) is a Japanese singer-songwriter whose 1981 debut single, “Flyday Chinatown”, became a revival-era hit four decades after a modest first release.[1][2]
Background
Born in Taitō, Tokyo, in 1961, Yasuha comes from a family of rakugo storytellers: her father was Hayashiya Sanpei I and her mother the novelist Kayoko Ebina.[1]
“Flyday Chinatown”
Her debut single, which she composed herself, was released by Polydor on 21 September 1981.[2] It peaked at only No. 69 on Oricon, selling about 56,000 copies.[1] Revived during the 2020s city pop boom — DJ Night Tempo featured it — it was made available digitally by Universal Music in 2022 and has been widely covered.[2]
Later life
Yasuha retired in 1988 on marrying rakugo performer Shunpūtei Koasa, relaunched her career after their 2007 divorce, and returned with “Ohisama yo Hohoende” in 2008, her first single in 22 years.[1]
