Tomita Lab is the recording project of producer Keiichi Tomita, whose meticulous, Steely Dan-influenced studio craft made him a key figure linking the AOR tradition of city pop to 2000s and 2010s Japanese pop.[1]
Producer
Born in Asahikawa in 1962, Tomita started as a backing-band guitarist and is a multi-instrumentalist who handles most of his production at his own Tomita Lab Studio.[1] He drew industry attention producing Kirinji in 1997 and produced MISIA’s “Everything” (2000), her biggest hit.[1] He cites Michael Brecker and Steely Dan among his influences and in 2014 published Night Fly, a book on the art and appreciation of recording.[1]
Tomita Lab
The Tomita Lab project began with Shipbuilding (2003) on Toshiba EMI, followed by Shiplaunching (2006), Shipahead (2010), Joyous (2013), Superfine (2016), M-P-C “Mentality, Physicality, Computer” (2018) and 7+ (2022), each built around guest vocalists.[1] In 2025 four singers joined Tomita Lab as members.[1]
