Takako Shirai is a singer-songwriter from Fujisawa who debuted on CBS/Sony in 1981 and became one of the leading female rock performers of the mid-1980s.[1]
Career
Shirai passed a CBS/Sony audition and debuted in 1981 with the album Do For Loving, billed as “the world’s cutest singer-songwriter”; she also sang backing vocals for Motoharu Sano and covered his “Someday” as a single in 1982.[1] Moving from pop towards rock, she formed Takako Shirai & Crazy Boys, scored her highest-charting single with “Chance!” (No. 12, 1984), and played sold-out shows including the Nippon Budokan.[1]
Later career
In 1988 she left her agency and label and moved to the United Kingdom with guitarist Kiyomi Honda, whom she married in 1993; her music became more acoustic from the mid-1990s.[1] She founded her own label, ROD, in 1999, revived the Crazy Boys for her 25th anniversary in 2006, and has worked on environmental and education causes.[1]
