Piper was a Japanese band from Hamamatsu, led by guitarist and vocalist Keisuke Yamamoto, whose mid-1980s albums on Yupiteru Records blended city pop with funk and soft fusion.[1][2]
History
Formed in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Piper later moved to Tokyo; Yamamoto cited British bands such as Wishbone Ash and Camel as influences, and original guitarist Yuji Suzuki went on to become an A&R man at Yupiteru.[1] The band released five albums in the 1980s, with their defining period from 1983 to 1985, when four were recorded.[2]
Summer Breeze
Their second album, Summer Breeze, moved toward a summery resort sound using vocoders, drum programming and Linn drums, with Masayoshi Takanaka, Tatsuro Yamashita and YMO’s “BGM” concept cited as touchstones; its surfer cover was among the label’s most expensive jackets.[1] Light in the Attic reissued it on vinyl as the first of three Piper reissues, and a compilation of tracks chosen by original members, Through The Past Away, was issued by Fourth Wave Record Factory.[1][2]
