Miki Matsubara was a Japanese singer and composer whose debut single, “Mayonaka no Door (Stay with Me)”, released when she was nineteen, topped global viral charts more than four decades later.[1][2]
Debut
Born in Kishiwada, Osaka, in 1959, Matsubara debuted on 5 November 1979 with “Mayonaka no Door (Stay with Me)”, composed by Tetsuji Hayashi.[2] Released on the See･Saw label, it reached No. 28 on Oricon; Canyon Records announced sales of 300,000.[1] Her first album, Pocket Park, followed in 1980.[1]
Composer and anime work
From the 1990s Matsubara concentrated on composing for anime and commercials. She sang “The Winner”, the opening theme of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, and wrote songs for other singers including Mariko Kouda.[1] She left the music industry in 2000 after a cancer diagnosis and died in 2004, aged 44.[1]
Revival
In October 2020 Indonesian singer Rainych posted a cover of “Mayonaka no Door”, which Billboard Japan credited with igniting a worldwide surge.[1][2] The original topped Spotify’s Global Viral chart for weeks in December 2020 and soundtracked more than 200,000 TikTok videos by February 2021; Pony Canyon reissued Pocket Park on vinyl that March.[1] In July 2026 the song passed 500 million Spotify streams, the first 20th-century Japanese recording to do so.[3]
