Meiko Nakahara is a Japanese singer-songwriter of the 1980s whose tropical, dance-floor city pop — and her anime themes for Dirty Pair and Kimagure Orange Road — made her a cult favourite of the revival.[1][2]
Career
Nakahara began composing as a schoolgirl and debuted in 1982 with the single “Kon’ya dake Dance Dance Dance” and the album Coconuts House.[1][2] “Kimitachi Kiwi Papaya Mango da ne” (1984) sold 237,000 copies, the 50th best-selling single in Japan that year.[1] She wrote and sang the opening and closing themes of the anime Dirty Pair, and “Ru-Ru-Ru-Russian Roulette” won Best Song at the 1986 Anime Grand Prix.[1]
Retirement and legacy
Her 1992 tour was her last public performance; she continued composing for other singers, including Vivian Hsu.[1] A tribute band, Lotos, formed in 2010, and “Fantasy” has become one of the most-shared songs of the online city pop revival.[1][2]
