Mai Yamane is a Japanese singer best known internationally for her 1980 album Tasogare, rediscovered in the city pop revival, and for singing on Yoko Kanno’s soundtracks for Cowboy Bebop.[1][2]
Career
After winning the Yamaha Music Foundation’s contest for young singers, Yamane debuted in 1979 with “Gozen Reiji”, written by Yoko Shibata.[1] Her album Tasogare (1980) attracted renewed attention from 2017.[1] Producer Pi’erre Bourne built an unreleased 2019 Playboi Carti and Young Nudy track on a sample of its title song, which went unreleased because the sample could not be cleared.[1][2]
Cowboy Bebop
From 1993 she worked with composer Yoko Kanno, singing “The Real Folk Blues”, “Don’t Bother None” and other songs on the 1997 Cowboy Bebop soundtracks; she returned for the 2021 live-action series.[1]
