Kumiko Yamashita (born 26 January 1959) is a singer from Beppu, Ōita, who debuted on Nippon Columbia in 1980 and scored a hit with “Sekidō Komachi Dokki” in 1982.[1]
Career
Yamashita was scouted while singing at a club in Hakata and debuted in 1980 with the single and album Bathroom kara Ai wo Komete on Nippon Columbia, where she recorded until 1988.[1] Her energetic concerts earned her the nickname “Standing-Ovation Kumiko” after an audience rose to its feet during an encore in 1981, and her 1982 single “Sekidō Komachi Dokki” became a hit. She is credited with coining the word “mune-kyun”, later used by Yellow Magic Orchestra for their 1983 single.[1]
Later years
After a hiatus following a 1988 concert, she returned in 1991 on Toshiba EMI with the album Joy for U and the single “Tonight (Hoshi no Furu Yoru ni)”. She was married to BOØWY guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei from 1985 to 1997, and in later years recorded &Friends (2013) and &Friends II (2014) with songwriter Yoshiyuki Ōsawa.[1]
