Kaoru Akimoto is a Japanese singer whose 1986 album Cologne, featuring “Dress Down”, became a sought-after city pop record and has been repeatedly reissued.[1]
Career
Akimoto sang backing vocals on a Yumi Matsutoya tour while at university, and debuted on 16 December 1985 on the Invitation label with “Paradox”, theme song of the OVA Honoo Tripper.[1] The album Cologne followed on 21 March 1986, including “Dress Down”.[1] In 1989 Akimoto joined the vocal group Shambhala, formed by Tetsuo Sakurai and Akira Jimbo, and later worked as a backing vocalist and songwriter before going on hiatus around 2000.[1]
Revival
Victor reissued Cologne on CD in 2016 and on LP in 2019, with a further 2020 reissue adding “Paradox” and “Yokan” as bonus tracks.[1] In 2023 Akimoto sang on “Passion” from Neo Standard, an album produced by Night Tempo.[1]
