Chisato Moritaka is a Japanese singer-songwriter who debuted on Warner Pioneer in 1987 and became one of the most distinctive pop stars of the late Shōwa and early Heisei years, selling over 6.4 million singles and 5.2 million albums by 1999.[1][2]
Career
Raised in Kumamoto, Moritaka won the grand prix of the first Pocari Sweat Image Girl Contest in 1986 and debuted on 25 May 1987 with “New Season”, the theme of the Toho film あいつに恋して, in which she starred.[1][2] Her 1988 album ミーハー was named after her first song with her own lyric credit, and her 1989 remake of Saori Minami’s “17才” became her first Oricon top-10 single, peaking at No. 8.[1][2] The album Kokon Tozai (1990) was her only No. 1 album, and “風に吹かれて” (1993) her first No. 1 single.[1]
Songwriting and later work
Moritaka wrote the lyrics for most of her albums, played drums and other instruments on many tracks, and recorded over 60 songs composed by Hideo Saitō; “私がオバさんになっても” (1992), cut from ROCK ALIVE, became a lasting favourite.[1][2] She married actor Yōsuke Eguchi in 1999 and retired at the end of that year, returning in 2012 for her 25th anniversary and completing a 200-song self-cover project on YouTube in 2017.[1]
