Awesome City Club is a Japanese band that began playing live in 2013, widely labelled in early coverage as a leading “neo city pop” act; their 2021 hit “Wasurena” took them to NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen.[1]
History
The band came together at the end of 2012 and began playing live in spring 2013.[1] Signed to Victor’s Connectone imprint, they released Awesome City Tracks and their major-label debut Awesome City Tracks 2 in 2015, followed by Awesome City Tracks 3 (2016), Awesome City Tracks 4 (2017) and Catch The One (2018).[1] After founder and bassist Takumi Matsuzaka and drummer Yukie departed in 2019 and 2020, the group continued as a trio of Atagi, PORIN and Morisee and moved to Avex’s cutting edge label.[1]
City pop and breakthrough
Early press regularly placed the band at the head of the “neo city pop” wave, though the members have said their influences lie elsewhere, describing their concept as making soundtracks for imaginary cities and blending funk, R&B, soul and pop.[1] “Wasurena”, written as an inspiration song for the film Hanataba Mitai na Koi wo Shita, became a major hit in early 2021, won an Excellence Award at the 63rd Japan Record Awards and was performed at the 72nd Kōhaku Uta Gassen.[1] The band announced a hiatus effective 1 April 2026.[1]
