Amii Ozaki (born Misuzu Ohara, 19 March 1957) is a Kyoto-born singer-songwriter who debuted on Toshiba EMI in 1976 and became one of the most in-demand pop composers of the 1980s, writing Anri’s “Olivia wo Kikinagara” and Seiko Matsuda’s “Tenshi no Wink”.[1][2]
Early life and debut
Ozaki began studying classical piano in 1965 at the age of eight. Her stage name “Ami” is taken from the French word for “friend”.[1] She made her professional debut in 1976 with the Toshiba EMI Express single “Meisou” (“Contemplation”), followed the same year by the album Shady, produced by Masataka Matsutoya.[1][2]
Career
Her breakthrough came in 1977 when “My Pure Lady” was used in a Shiseido commercial. After moving to Pony Canyon, where she recorded from 1980 to 1996, she released Meridian-Melon (1980) and the single “21st Century Cinderella”, which reached No. 56 on Oricon; Hot Baby and Air Kiss followed in 1981.[1][2] Her 1985 album 10-banme no Mew won a best-album award at the 27th Japan Record Awards.[2]
Songwriting for others
Ozaki is widely known as a writer for other singers. Her credits include “Olivia wo Kikinagara” for Anri, “Tenshi no Wink” and “Boy no Kisetsu” for Seiko Matsuda, “Haru no Yokan -I’ve been mellow-” for Saori Minami, and “Soyokaze no Melody” for Naoko Kawai.[1][2] She is married to musician Ray Ohara.[1]
